One look at Batman wielding a katana in samurai armor did the trick; I was in. Hell, the very title just revs up my inner ten year-old. Add to all of this the animation which is just stunning and it seems like a slam dunk.

But it is just so far off the mark. The story is terrible. At first, it's the sort of weird that you just go with Batman sent back to feudal Japan, okay, got it , but soon goes completely off the rails. The movie's more interested with buildings turning into mechs than an actual Batman story, and it's just one transformation scene after another.

Eventually, he does engage in swordfighting with the Joker, but you have to sit through a series of dragging set pieces to get there - and it's work. Lots of work. I think the concept's terrific, but lose the high tech. After an interesting opening which establishes its potentially potent premise, the piece makes decision after decision that are often just flat-out baffling and ultimately result in a bat-excrement crazy experience.

First of all, there's the aesthetic. You'd think that a story about the Dark Knight set in ancient Japan made mainly by Japanese people would be a prime candidate to widen the audience of the country's already massively popular anime style, but the filmmakers decided instead to go down a cel-shaded 3D route which never quite captures the look or feel you want from this sort of thing.

It often looks stiff, too, and never quite meshes with the infrequent but superior 2D segments that occasionally - and, again, sometimes strangely - slip in. It's disappointing, to be honest; something like 'Batman: Gotham Knight ' had a much better anime-inspired section, for example.

Then, there's the plot, which spirals out of control almost as quickly as it's established. Talking 'chibi' monkeys, an ancient prophecy, giant 'Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers '-esque robots, Samurai sword fights, JRPG-style introductions, a 'Loving Vincent '-looking 2D sequence and, no lie, some of the absolute worst haircuts I've ever seen on screen all add up to an incohesive, borderline off-putting affair that's difficult to engage with purely because it's so seemingly random.

Yet, for all its strangeness, the flick has a certain self-aware charm to it that, when paired with its exciting action scenes, prevent it from being a bad time overall.
